Why You Should Never Wear Shoes In Your Home

mopping up after a dirty shoe that tracked in dirt in a homeNow that we have entered into the flu season, and the coronavirus is as serious as ever, it is a good time to talk about why you should avoid wearing shoes inside your home. Keeping your floors clean, and minimizing what is tracked in from outside will help the health of your home in many ways.  Read on to learn more about why your trusted cleaning service in Loveland suggests that you should check your shoes at your door.

What’s the big deal with shoes in the house?

Cleaning your home is not just for aesthetic purposes, but for health and safety as well, to help keep your home safe during the flu season, keep the coronavirus at bay, and to keep your air healthy and fresh.  Wearing shoes inside a home can have negative health effects, and will most certainly make keeping your home clean much harder.

According to the University of Arizona over 400,000 units of bacteria can be found on the outside of a shoe, including E. Coli and pneumonia!  If that is not reason enough to not wear shoes in a home, we don’t know what is!

In addition to bacteria found on shoes, toxins can be picked up by shoes as well.  According to a study from Baylor University, people who live near paved roads sealed with coal tar have an increased risk of cancer due to toxins, and that these toxins can be tracked into your home on your shoes.

How should I get my family to follow a no shoes in the house policy?

Take your shoes off at the front door

Keep a mat at your front door and always leave your shoes there before entering your home. Make sure to remind your family to do it as well, especially if they like getting on top of their beds with shoes on.  In winter time, leaving shoes outside can be really tough.  Move the mat inside, and make sure it is large enough to store multiple pairs of shoes.

Use a plastic shoe tray

A great alternative to a normal mat, is a rimmed rubber or plastic boot and shoe tray.  These help a lot when shoes are dirty, wet, and coated with debris.  They can be easily washed and hosed down, and will keep the floor area around it dry and clean.

If you have the space, and are juggling many pairs of shoes, it can be a good idea to invest in a shoe cubby system.  You can assign cubbies to each member of the family – this not only instills the habit of taking shoes off at the front door, but makes it easy and organized for everyone to store their shoes.

Taking off shoes will save time on cleaning and maintenance

In addition to the bacteria that shoes track into a home, they will also bring in extra dirt and grime.  This makes cleaning a much tougher chore – you will have more debris to sweep up, and a harder time mopping, as there will be more dirt, dust, and mud set into the floors and carpet.

Additionally, certain types of shoes can be pretty hard on your flooring.  Hard and pointy dress shoes can scratch and dent soft wood floors, and shoes with pebbles stuck in the tread will scratch all types of floors very easily.

A no shoe policy will lead to less clutter

As with anything in the home that does not have a proper place to be stored, shoes left out create tons of clutter throughout the home.  Not only does clutter make cleaning harder to perform, it makes finding things tougher.  Keeping shoes at the entrance to the house keeps everything more organized and efficient.

Get everyone in the household a pair of slippers

One reason that people don’t want to take off their shoes in a home is that they are more comfortable than walking around barefoot.  To solve this problem, get everyone a pair of slippers or light indoor shoes to wear.  This is great in cooler weather, as your feet will stay warmer and more comfortable.  These can be stored next to the shoe mat or tray, so it is an easy transition from outdoor shoes to slippers when people get home.
