Why do I have stains on my toilet seat?

Even if you are cleaning your toilets regularly, toilet seat stains may still be an issue. As part of any cleaning routine to keep everything clean in your bathroom, tackling toilet seat stains is really important. As with everything house cleaning, consistently cleaning things throughout the house, such as electronics and bathrooms, will make everything easier!

Toilet seat stains are common, and can be caused by a variety of factors. One of the most likely causes of toilet seat stains is from urine. The acid, proteins, and other substances found in urine can react with the air and water forming stains. Hard water can be another culprit of toilet seat stains. When hard water dries, it leaves behind minerals on the surface that will leave hard water stains.

Sunlight can also be a factor in stains, as it can discolor surfaces. There is not much that can be done once sunlight has altered a surface, but it is good to be aware of it, so you can try to reduce the sun’s impact on sensitive surfaces throughout your home.

Other things that can contribute to the stains are the use of certain harsh cleaning chemicals, as well as dead skin or other cosmetic’s that make their way onto the toilet.

How can I remove my toilet seat stains?

For stains that are caused by urine, hard water, or cosmetics, you can easily start to work on getting rid of them. Unfortunately, some stains from things like sun damage or chemical damage, will likely remain in place permanently.

To get started, you can try to use one of the following methods for toilet seat stain removal. These methods are all safe and natural, and do not include any harsh chemicals like bleach, which can actually cause additional toilet staining with heavy use.

  • Vinegar and baking soda:
    • You can start off by trying to use vinegar on the stains. Simply spray some white cleaning vinegar on the stains, and let it set in for about 10-15 minutes. You can spray some more on, and wipe and scrub with a sponge or rag until the stains are lifted.
    • For more scrubbing power, you can make a 1:1 vinegar and baking soda paste that can be applied to the stains. This will give more abrasive scrubbing power. You can scrub the stain with the paste, then spray water or vinegar on it to wipe everything off clean.
  • Hydrogen peroxide:
    • This can be used in a similar fashion to vinegar for another all natural cleaning solution. You can also add baking soda to it to add to the stain removal power.
  • Borax:
    • Borax will give scrubbing and abrasive power to removing toilet seat stains. You can make a lemon juice and borax cleaning paste that can be used in the same fashion as the vinegar and baking soda paste.
    • Simply mix a cup of borax with a ¼ cup of lemon juice to form a paste. Apply the paste to the stains, and scrub it with a rag or sponge. Wipe everything away, and spray the area with water to make sure everything is clean and flushed away.

Is there a way to prevent toilet seat stain buildup?

Preventing toilet seat stains will go a long way in making cleaning your bathroom that much easier, and will also make it much more pleasant for everyone who uses the bathroom!

Some easy toilet seat stain prevention methods include the following:

  • Clean consistently!
    • This is a recurring theme in cleaning, but is usually one of the most effective. The more often something is cleaned, the easier it will be, and the less likely it is for stubborn stains to form.
  • Always flush the toilet:
    • This will help to keep urine stains to a minimum, as it won’t be sitting for prolonged periods of time in the toilet and around the toilet seat.
  • Try to keep sun exposure to a minimum. If you have a ton of sunlight coming in a bathroom window, try to keep your toilet lid closed so that the sun does not have a chance to discolor the toilet seat or toilet bowl.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean:
    • While harsh chemicals can make the cleaning job easier, they may not always be the safest to use, especially on a regular basis. From staining the toilet seat and bowl to the health of the cleaner, there are many green alternatives to use that work really well.
  • Use a toilet tank tablet:
    • While this may not affect the toilet seat directly, using a toilet tank cleaning tablet will help to clean the toilet each time that you flush the toilet.

By using some of these techniques, you should be able to keep your toilet and toilet seat looking great consistently.
