The kitchen area can be a complex area to clean, as there are many different elements to work on, such as the stove, sink, counters, and refrigerator.  If you are performing a much needed deep cleaning, you will need to focus on all areas of the kitchen including:

  • Stove and oven
  • Counters
  • Exterior cabinets (and potentially interior)
  • Shelves
  • Refrigerator
  • Floors
  • Appliances (inside/outside of microwave, dishwasher, toaster oven)
  • Putting away dishes and cutting down on clutter

How long will it take to deep clean the kitchen?

There is no clear-cut answer to this question, as all kitchens are a bit different.  It will also depend on the state of the kitchen.  Like anything, the more consistently you clean an area, the less often it will need to be deep cleaned. 

Factors to consider include:

  • The size of your kitchen is the main one. A huge kitchen may take multiple hours to fully deep clean, especially when there are lots of cabinets, double sinks, and larger iron stove tops.  A small apartment kitchen may be able to be deep cleaned in 45 minutes, especially if there is a glass stove top, and not many cabinets.
  • The state of your kitchen. An extremely messy kitchen space that has not been cleaned for a long time will take much longer than a kitchen that has been consistently cleaned, regardless of the size of it.  
  • Types of appliances will invariably affect how long the cleaning will take.  For example, a glass stove top is much faster to clean than a 6 burner iron gas stove, as it requires cleaning multiple elements, likely with burned on grease and food splatter.  

What are some ways to increase my cleaning speed and develop a routine?

The best tried and true way to increase the speed of a kitchen cleaning is to be consistent in cleaning it.  A full deep cleaning of a kitchen can take quite a while, especially if you are not a professionally trained maid.  

If you can get on a cleaning routine, then the time required to clean the kitchen can be dramatically reduced.  Use the following tips to stay on top of the cleaning to reduce the need for a full deep kitchen cleaning:

  • Wipe down the stove top after each use, especially if there has been a lot of splatter, using an all purpose spray and microfiber cloth.  The sooner this area is cleaned, the easier it will be.  Food splatter will harden and dry, and become much more of a chore later on. 
  • Try not to let dishes pile up, as it will make keeping the whole kitchen clean harder. 
  • Similar to the stove top, wipe down the exterior of cabinets often, especially when there has been food splatter or grease buildup.  Keeping the exterior cabinets consistently clean, will make your kitchen feel that much cleaner, and make cleaning much faster. 
  • Wipe out microwaves often, by microwaving a bowl of water for a few minutes, and using the steam to wipe it out. 
  • Keep your counters clear so that they can be wiped down quickly and often.  It is best to try to do this daily, using a disinfectant spray or an all purpose cleaner suitable for your countertop surface. 

When you incorporate all of these little tips very often, you will rarely need to do a full kitchen cleaning, as it will stay in great shape.
