In addition to being one of the top rated house cleaners in Fort Collins, we also love to give you advice so you can maintain your home without needing to call in the pros. One of the best ways to do this is to utilize the help and energy of your kiddos.

To get your children involved in helping out with home cleaning, having them clean their bedroom is a great place to get them into a routine. Not only will it help you out, it will show them the difference cleaning can make in their own personal space.

How do I get my kids to help with home cleaning?

Getting your kids (and family) involved in cleaning may take some work, but it is totally doable! Once you instill a little bit of cleaning motivation into your children, they may actually begin to start liking cleaning and the appreciation of the sense of accomplishment after they clean a room.

A good place to get started with this is to have your kids clean their own bedroom. Not only will this give them a specific task that they have control over, it will free up some extra time for you to focus on keeping up with cleaning other areas of your home.

What is a good kid friendly bedroom cleaning process?

Whether you are cleaning a bedroom or your home office, the process for cleaning a room is generally the same. When you involve the little ones, it is best to keep the room cleaning process simple, yet structured. Working together is a great way to teach them how to clean, in which you can show them how to do something, and let them demonstrate it with you.

Checklists can be really useful as well, especially for kids who like to visualize a process to make sure that nothing is missed.

For a child’s room that has not been cleaned for a long time, you can use the following steps to get started cleaning it with your kids:

  1. Gather Cleaning Supplies
    1. No special cleaning tools will be needed to clean a bedroom
    2. Gather an all purpose cleaner (and potentially a disinfecting or sanitizing spray), vacuum, microfiber cloths, and a duster with a high duster attachment
  2. Declutter the Bedroom
    1. Collect all trash and recyclables throughout the room
    2. Gather up anything that can be donated instead of thrown away, including old clothes, books and games
  3. High Dusting
    1. Once clutter has been removed, it is usually best to start with high dusting
    2. Working from top to bottom allows dust to fall on areas that have not yet been cleaned
    3. Make sure to dust ceiling fans, higher corners and edges, and the tops of shelves, as well as window and door frames
  4. Strip the Bedding
    1. This is a good time to show your child how to do laundry
  5. General Dusting and Straightening Up
    1. Make sure to dust all surfaces and items, including any screens, frames, baseboards, and shelves
    2. Use this as an opportunity to organize any items that are out in the open to create a clean and uncluttered environment in the bedroom
    3. Pick up and put away any laundry
  6. Wet Wipe
    1. Depending on the state of the room, a wet wiping of surfaces may be needed
    2. Focus on baseboards, windowsills, doors, and light switches
  7. Make the Bed
    1. This is good to do once everything has been cleaned in the room, aside from the floors
  8. Clean the Floors
    1. Depending on the flooring surface, you may only need to vacuum, or both vacuum and mop for hard surfaces
    2. This is a good time to make sure that there is no clutter left on the floors or under furniture
    3. Make sure to vacuum up all of the dust that was knocked down during the cleaning

How do I keep my kids motivated to clean?

Giving your kids autonomy and control over the chore of cleaning can help to get them motivated. They can see the direct impact of their efforts in a very clear before and after result.

Giving them ownership over their role to clean their room can be motivating, but you may also need to be a bit stern to instill that this chore is not optional. Further autonomy and ownership of the role can be created by giving your child their own cleaning kit. This will also make it easier and more convenient for them to get started on the cleaning task.

Having a checklist will also keep children moving forward. This can create a game of sorts, as they have something to complete. You can print out multiple lists so that each time they clean, they start with a fresh new checklist to complete. You can create games and rewards as well, such as for every time 5 checklists/room cleanings are completed, they will get a small prize. This can be as simple as a favorite treat, or going out as a family for a fun activity. Keeping cleaning fun is the best way to keep your kids involved and excited about helping out around the house!
