Guide to Summer House Cleaning

An important thing to remember in summer time is that your home has a tendency to get messy and dirty faster. When kids are home from school all day, and windows are open throughout the day, dust, dirt, and grime have a much easier time settling into your home.  Additionally, keeping the clutter down becomes more of a challenge.

Stay on top of clutter

One of the most important ways to keep a home clean in the summer months is to reduce clutter.  Between outdoor activities with the kids and game nights, clutter can pile up very quickly.  Follow these tips to stay on top of the clutter before it gets out of hand:

  • Wash all of your dishes, glasses, and cookware right after use
  • Have a designated area for backpacks and other bags that get taken in and out of the house frequently
  • Incorporate your kids in the declutter process
    • Teach them to put their toys and games away in a specific area after each use
  • Reduce the amount of pet toys that you own so they do not get scattered throughout the house
  • Go through mail each day to recycle junk mail and other non-essential mail before it piles up on tables
  • Put remote controls and other miscellaneous electronics in one storage place

Take it room by room

If there was ever a definite way to ensure that your home is NOT cleaned regularly, it would be trying to do a full house cleaning all at once too frequently.  Instead of tackling everything at once, take it room by room.  An easy way to do this is to clean one room per day, on a rotating basis.  This only takes a few minutes out of each day, and is not as daunting as tackling your whole home.

Rotating room example:

    • Monday:  Clean the kitchen, which is usually the dirtiest after a weekend with the whole family home
    • Tuesday:  Clean the living room, which will mostly be decluttering, dusting, and vacuuming
    • Wednesday:  Enlist the help of your children and tackle the bedrooms, which will include a full change of sheets, decluttering, and vacuuming
    • Thursday:  Master bathroom
    • Friday:  Spare bathroom(s)
    • Weekend:  Work on keeping the clutter down and actively cleaning up in the kitchen, and relax!

Don’t forget the dusting!

With windows and doors open more often, combined with dry weather and wind, dust will build up quicker in your home throughout the summer months.  Like cleaning rooms on a rotating basis, it is best to not neglect the dusting until it is too late.

Special areas to focus on include ceiling fans, high corners throughout the home, and shelves.  Not only will regular dusting help create a cleaner and calmer environment, it will help immensely with air quality.
