Why do laminate floors get streaky after cleaning?

Similar to getting streak free windows, using the right tool for the job will help your floor cleaning process. Making sure you are using a mop that works well for laminate floors, that does not allow too much moisture to be laid down is a first key step to helping combat streaky laminate floors. Microfiber mops work well for these floors, as they are easy to use, and don’t require excess water for use, such as with traditional string and bucket mops. In addition to the water causing streaking, excess moisture can also damage laminate flooring. 

Another reason for streaky floors is using too much product. Whether you are using a homemade spray or store bought solution, you want to make sure to not over concentrate your mixture. Typically a little product goes a long way, especially if you are consistently cleaning your laminate floors. When too much product is used, it will remain on the floor after cleaning, leaving a sticky and streaky residue.

What is the best product to use?

There are many store bought products that you can use to safely clean laminate flooring, and again, the biggest rule is to not over concentrate and over wet your floors. For a simple homemade solution, you can mix the following into a spray bottle:

• 1 part distilled white vinegar
• 1 part rubbing alcohol
• 1 part distilled water
• A few drops of essential oil for a fresh smell

Ideally, you would use this mixture in a spray bottle with a microfiber mop. Simply spray the mixture onto the floor, and mop it up. Alternatively, you may be able to spray the solution directly onto the mop head. The advantage of this is that it further reduces the amount of moisture on the floors. 

How long should it take to clean my laminate floors?

This is dependent on a few factors, but will primarily be controlled by the size and square footage of the flooring that you are cleaning, and how often you clean them. Additional factors, such as whether you have pets in your home, and if your family is good about taking their shoes off inside, will affect the cleaning time. 

Generally, for an average size room that is cleaned on a regular basis, a full floor cleaning can be done in under 10 minutes. Using a pre-mixed spray bottle of solution and a microfiber mop, there is little prep work needed before getting to work. Additionally, not using too much product and water allows the floor to dry very quickly, making the whole process that much easier. 

Should I sweep and vacuum first?

Following our floor cleaning guide will help you out with any floor cleaning process, which will usually start with a sweep and mop. The more often that you clean your flooring, the easier this will be. 

If you have a microfiber mop setup, it is likely that you can buy a dust mop head, which can make the pre-mop prep work really easy. Whether you use a broom or dust mop head, it is best to use a vacuum in conjunction with it, as it is quicker and more thorough than using a dust pan. 

Depending on the type of vacuum you have, you may even be able to get away with solely a quick vacuum of the floor before mopping. As always, the stricter you are about not wearing shoes in your home, and the more consistently you focus on cleaning your floors, the easier the whole process will be!
