Why is it important to dust regularly?

Dust can build up quickly in homes, especially those in rural areas or when windows are open often, particularly during windy times or when allergens are high in the air. Not only does dusting help improve the look and feel of your home, it is also much healthier for your lungs.

Improved air quality

Your home air quality is very important, as we spend so much of our time indoors. Dust can harbor many allergens and irritants, such as pet dander, pollen, dust mites, dead skin cells and dirt.

Dust also has a tendency to build up in hidden areas, such as in your heating and cooling system. This can then be recirculated throughout the air in your home, and can also clog your system or grow mold.

Better organization

Just like when you are packing for a trip, organization in your home is so important! From your home office to your kitchen, staying on top of clutter and cleaning is crucial to enjoying the space that you live in. When you concentrate on dusting, you will automatically be dealing with any excess clutter or disorganized mess that has built up. This will help to nip these things in the bud before they can get really out of hand.

Create a more pleasant living space

Dust is not just an allergen that can irritate your lungs, but it is also very unsightly! There are not too many neglected cleaning related tasks that can have such a drastic effect on the look and feel of your home. A home coated in dust will feel very stale and uninviting. Dusting on a regular basis will keep your home looking and feeling that much fresher.

What are some ways to keep dust from building up in my home?

There are many ways to help keep dust from building up in your home. Just like everything cleaning related, these are not one time fixes, but should be continuously worked on for the best results.

Start with a extensive dusting of your entire home

The best way to get rid of dust buildup in your home is to dust! Start with an extensive deep clean dusting throughout your entire home. You will want to make sure to touch all surfaces, including hidden and tricky places that dust tends to accumulate in without our noticing it until it is too late.

A simple process to make sure that all the dust is taken care of is to start room by room. If you are pressed for time or live in a very large home, you can break this task up over the course of a few days. This will make the task more manageable, so it is not as overwhelming.

Pick a room to start in, and first look up. Do all the high dusting to begin with, and work your way around the room. Don’t worry about knocking dust down onto the lower surfaces – that will be taken care of later. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may need to use a duster on an extendable pole, making sure to focus on high edges and corners. Make sure to take a look at your ceiling fans too, as these accumulate a ton of dust.

Once you are finished with the high dusting, you can start to move down, focusing on mid level areas, such as door frames, window sills, counters, and desks. Depending on the level of dust you are dealing with, you may be able to dry dust with a microfiber cloth, or you may want to use an all purpose spray to help loosen caked on dust. This is also a good time to dust all of your items, such as picture frames, screens, and nick nacks. It is also a great time to do some decluttering. The more objects that you have out, the more dust can accumulate, and the harder and more time consuming dusting will be.

After you finish with the mid level dusting, you can move to the ground. This is a great time to dust your baseboards, as well as any electronics that are lying around on the floors. Once that is done, you should do a solid vacuuming of the room. This will help to get any dust that is on your floors lifted up, and will also aid in picking up dust and debris that was knocked down when high dusting.

Finish everything up with a mopping of the floor, and enjoy your dust free room! In the future, depending on how severe the dust is in your home or the layout of your home, you can try to do a whole floor in this style for greater efficiency. For example, start on your uppermost floor, and do all of the high dusting at once, then move on to all the mid level dusting, and finish with the lower dusting and floors all as one.

Keep the clutter down

Excess clutter works as a great dust trap, making the routine dusting task much more difficult and time consuming. Clutter needs to be dusted and picked up to effectively clean the surfaces underneath. Keeping clutter down will make cleaning and dusting easier, and your personal home space will be that much more pleasant and peaceful to be in.

Keep your windows closed more often

Keeping windows open in the warm months is so nice! It airs out your home, and makes it feel as though you are outside too. Unfortunately, open windows can also blow in extra dust and allergens from outside. While you should not keep your windows closed all the time by any means, being smart about when they are open and closed will help to decrease the amount of dust brought into your home.

Try to close your windows anytime it is windy outside, allergens are high in the air, or it is smoky or there are other air quality issues or advisories. In addition, make sure that any window you have open has a screen. Screens will help to catch dust and other particles in the air before they blow into your home.

Additionally, make sure to periodically dust and wash your screens, especially at the beginning of the warm season where you will have your windows open more often. The screens will build up lots of dust and debris, and cleaning them will go a long way to help improve your air quality and the overall feel of your home.

Don’t wear shoes in the home

Wearing shoes in your home is bad on many levels, and the dust it can bring in is no exception! Make sure to have a mat outside of your door that you can wipe your shoes on when entering inside, and have a place to store your shoes away at the door. Not only will this help to keep your home more organized, having a dedicated spot for shoes will help to ensure that people don’t walk into your home with their shoes on.

Additionally, any other clothing that is really dusty or dirty from being outside should be taken off before entering the home. You can try to beat your jacket or shirt before coming in the door to help shake off excess dirt and dust, before tracking it further into the home.

Keep dusting!

While there is no way to stop the accumulation of dust in your home, consistency is key! Keep dusting on a regular basis, and you will make the job easier and more efficient, while improving the air quality and feel of your home.
