Pillow talk – no, not that kind! Pillow health is vital to your health, and should not be ignored. While regular cleaning of your pillow case is important, it is just one step in keeping you and your pillow in top condition. In addition to frequent washing of your sheets, your pillow should be enclosed in a zippered pillow cover that can be washed in the washing machine monthly. A clean pillow cover can further protect your pillow from allergens, dust mites, and other oils from your skin and hair.
To clean your pillow, first remove the pillow case and pillow cover to be washed separate of the pillow. Before putting the pillow in the machine, let it fill using the hottest water setting available and use a low suds detergent. Add the pillow, and allow the washer to agitate. Rinse several times.
Try to dry the pillow initially with a clean cloth, and be very careful if you have a down pillow, as to not ruin the feathers. The pillow can either be hung to dry outside, or placed in a dryer with clean tennis balls to prevent the pillow from clumping up. Fluff the pillow manually once the pillow is dry and enjoy your clean pillow!
Remember, pillows do not last forever, even with frequent care, so don’t hesitate to replace your pillow as it begins to lose it’s form and comfort.
