Let’s face it – moving is not fun, but with proper planning and organization, you can reduce the stress and anxiety associated with it. To make the process as seamless as possible, follow some of these simple steps.
One of the easiest things to do when you begin the moving and packing process is to label all of your boxes and containers. Don’t just label what is in the box, but label where each box goes. There is nothing worse than needing something, and having to rip through a bunch of boxes to find it. In addition, it is helpful to make a box that is filled with important items that will be needed immediately after moving. This will help ease the endless search for important things. You can also unpack this box first, moving in the direction of not waiting weeks to unpack into your new home.
We have talked a lot about negative effects of clutter on the Mulberry Maids blog, and moving out can give you a great opportunity to get rid of excess stuff. As you pack, have a donation box, a recycling box, and a trash box handy, and do your best to pitch out what you don’t need. Not only will moving the excess clutter be a hassle and an extra stress, moving unneeded items will make the unpacking process that much harder!
For many people, unpacking may be worst part of the moving process! One easy way to stay organized is to directly move each box into its correct room or space in the house. If you have properly labeled each of your boxes (as described above!), then this shouldn’t be a hard task. Having boxes in the correct location will keep your new home space feeling less cluttered and crowded, and it will make unpacking a more reasonable task. If you are busy, try to unpack the important high use areas first, such as your kitchen and master bedroom and bathroom. You can then move on to the other rooms, trying to tackle one per day until you are fully moved in.
Lastly, do not wait until the last minute to begin the moving process. This is as true for packing up as it is for unpacking. Always give yourself plenty of time so you don’t need to rush and stress about what needs to be done. The more tasks you pile onto a day, the less efficient you will be, and often, the less you will actually get done.
