Where should I start?

Additionally, if this is a new home purchase, you will want to change the locks on the home. You never know how many sets of keys are out in other peoples’ hands, so it is best to change all locks right away.
What about cleaning?
Unless a professional move in/move out cleaning was paid for by the previous owners, and specified in your contract, it is best to perform this type of comprehensive cleaning on your home before you move anything into it. This can be done on your own, making sure to clean and disinfect the following areas, or you should hire a local and reputable cleaning company to perform the job.
Make sure to address the following areas, in addition to your normal full deep cleaning:
- Interior of appliances (fridge, oven, microwave)
- Hand wipe all baseboards
- Inside of all cabinets throughout the kitchen and bathrooms
- Disinfect high touch areas, such as lightswitches and door handles
- Use disinfectant in the bathroom, especially around the toilet
- All windows, window tracks, and sills
A full and complete cleaning is best done on an empty home, before things are moved in. This serves two purposes: you don’t want to move your furniture and belongings into an unclean home, and you want to be able to effectively clean and address areas before they are covered up by furniture or belongings.
Prepare for cold weather
Similar to getting your home ready for colder weather, if your new home is an older home, you should take a look at anything that may contribute to your home being drafty. Inspect the weatherstripping, baseboards, and fireplaces for any drafts to make sure your home stays warm and efficient through the cold months.
Change any air filters
Breathing clean air is essential to the health of you and your family, so it is best to change any filters throughout the home when you move in. Make sure to document when you chang them so they can be replaced on time in the future.
Take a look at the appliances
If your new home included a washer and dryer, be sure to clean these out before use. This can include moving the appliances to clean behind and underneath, as well as the interiors. You can run an empty clean cycle on your washer before use, and make sure to clean out the dryer vent as well.
Clean doors
Doors are an often neglected thing to clean in a home, especially once the home is moved into. Use this time to give them a thorough cleaning, both interior and exterior. Inspect the exterior
Take some time to do a thorough check and cleaning of the exterior of your home. This includes unclogging and cleaning gutters, washing down exterior decks and patios, and doing a really good sweeping and spray down of your empty garage. These areas are much easier to clean (and fix as needed) when they are empty.
Additionally, this is a great time to organize your garage before moving everything into it. Once a garage is full of stuff, cleaning and organizing it becomes much more of a challenge.
