• Clean inside of the refrigerator and all the cabinets throughout the home.

What areas should be cleaned during a move out?

The simple answer to this question is that every area in your home should be cleaned.  Unlike a typical home cleaning, extra areas should be addressed to get your home in top shape to finish your move out.

• Deeper scrubbing, particularly in the kitchen (oven, stove, sink) and the bathrooms (toilet and shower). 
• Dusting and wiping high areas and corners that can easily be neglected.
• Baseboards should be wet wiped by hand to remove dust, grime, and anything else that has accumulated on them.
• Closets, cabinets, and drawers will all need to be fully emptied, vacuumed, dusted, and wiped out. 
• Keep an eye out for details on the floors that should be taken care of.  Spills and stains can be hidden underneath belongings in a lived in home, but will be noticeable to new owners or landlords during inspection. 
• Walls should be spot cleaned and inspected for marks and stains. 
• Doors should be detailed and cleaned, to make sure they are not holding dust on the creases or dirt and grime around the door handles.  

What about other non-cleaning related tasks?

While cleaning is perhaps the most important aspect of getting a home ready for move out, there are other areas that should not be overlooked.  

• Inspect walls for any holes or nails that should be removed.  For small holes in the wall, it is best to try to repair them, as your landlord will likely withhold part of your security deposit to fix them. 
• Touch up paint blemishes and scratches with paint on the walls.  Doing this will make a huge difference in how the home looks for the new owners.
