Why aren’t all microfiber cloths the same?

There are a few different types of microfiber cloths to use for cleaning, all with different characteristics to make cleaning easier and more effective. Microfiber cloths are textiles made from very fine synthetics, typically polyester and nylon, that are split into microscopic fibers. These fibers are 100 times finer than hair, giving the textile a huge amount of surface area, while also being highly absorbent. This helps to make them great tools for cleaning all types of surfaces throughout the home. 

Below is a breakdown of the common microfiber cloth types. 

Multi–surface cloth:

These types of microfiber cloths are good for all general cleaning throughout your home from dusting to cleaning your dishwasher. These are your typical microfiber cloths and rags, and have a terry type of weave that is safe for all surfaces. 

Textured cloth:

While these will not be as powerful for scrubbing stains as a melamine sponge would be, they are made with a textured weave for extra scrubbing power. This uneven pattern helps to give more friction while scrubbing, while still being safe for surfaces. They are also effective for drying surfaces, as the texture can help to pick up moisture from the surface, as well as to wick it away. This allows the cloth to stay drier for longer. 

Glass cloth:

These types of cloth are made with a knit texture, and are effective at removing streaks, prints, and smudges from glass, stainless steel, and other smooth surfaces. 

Polishing cloth:

These cloths are great for applying and removing polishes for surfaces such as metal and jewelry. Polishing cloths have more plush and soft characteristics compared to an all purpose microfiber cloth, usually made with a fleece material. 

How do microfiber cloths compare to cotton?

While microfiber cloths do have a larger environmental impact than cotton, they are more effective for cleaning than cotton. Cotton cloths have a tendency to just push and move dirt and debris around when cleaning. They also can hold on to odor and bacteria, as they are an organic material. Additionally, cotton can leave behind lint, which is really frustrating when cleaning mirrors and other glass surfaces. 

Microfiber cloths are able to pick up dirt when cleaning, and they dry much faster. They also last longer, making them reusable for long term use.
