How To Deep Clean Your Porch

Summertime in northern Colorado means quality time on your porch- with perfect weather, great company, and tasty food!  Unfortunately it also means that it is time to clean your porch, and you should try to keep it clean for hanging out with friends and family.  Outdoor spaces collect a lot of dirt and grime, and are subject to whatever weather Colorado wants to throw its way. It is recommended to provide weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning to keep your porch in great shape.

If you have not yet done a seasonal deep cleaning of your porch this year, there is no better time to start.

  1. Remove all furniture, rugs, and accessories from the space, is possible.
  2. Start off by sweeping or dusting cobwebs and dust from the ceilings, walls, ceiling fans, window sills, and outdoor lighting fixtures.
  3. Perform a thorough sweeping to pick up any loose dirt, leaves, etc.
  4. Depending on what type of outdoor porch you have, you may want to give your porch a good hose down. Ideally with a pressurized hose attachment to help loosen up and clear away the grime and dirt.
  5. Scrub away grime in areas such as window sills, doors, corners, etc. using warm water or a general all purpose cleaner, such as a DIY vinegar based solution.
  6. Mop the floors to take care of any left over dirt or grime.
  7. Clean any screens that you have by vacuuming (from the outside if possible) the screens with a soft attachment brush.  Use an edge or crevice attachment to then tackle the corners of the window sill and screen. Grab your hose and spray down the screens, from the inside pointing outside.  Use a soft brush dipped in hot soapy water to scrub down the screens, then finish up with one last hose spray.

Once you have performed a deep seasonal cleaning, you can start some simple weekly maintenance cleaning. Do a thorough dusting of the window sills, doors, and anything else such as a ceiling fan, followed by a sweep or vacuum of the floors.  Check your lighting as well, and clean as needed. Dust, grime, and insects tend to collect on outdoor lighting, and keeping them cleaned really keeps a space looking fresh.
