How should I clean a wooden table?

While there are many ways to clean your wooden table, just like dusting lights throughout your home, there are efficient ways to go about it. Like so many things in cleaning, consistency is key, whether you are trying to keep up with cleaning food and grease splatter in your kitchen or keep your tables looking sleek and clean.

To get started with cleaning your table you can start by:

  • Clearing the table of all clutter and belongings
  • Wiping the table down with a very lightly damp microfiber cloth
  • Applying a little bit of dish soap to the table by mixing warm water with a couple drops of dish soap to help with sticky spots of food residue
  • Drying the table with a dry and clean microfiber cloth, making sure no moisture sits on the wood, as it can be damaging to it

What are the best products to use?

Many times the best products to use are also the simplest and most natural. For a routine cleaning of a wooden table, you can make a mixture of warm water and dish soap by doing the following:

  • Prepare a bowl of warm water
  • Add one to two drops of liquid dish soap in the water
  • Dip a microfiber cloth into the solution

Vinegar can also be used on wooden tables, specifically for water marks. To tackle these marks, mix equal parts of vinegar and olive oil together, and work into the water marks. Rub the solution into the wood with the grain. When the marks have been removed, you should wipe away the solution with a clean dry microfiber cloth.

For other stubborn stains or stickiness that the warm water and mild dish soap will not remove, you can try a mineral spirit mixture. Ventilate your room well, and test the spirit on an inconspicuous spot on the table to make sure it doesn’t damage the finish. To proceed, simply pour some of the spirits onto a microfiber cloth, and rub the area clean. It is possible that this still won’t fully remove or clean up your wood, and the best bet may be to refinish the wood.

What are some other tips to keep my tables looking great?

As with all areas of the home, cleaning consistently is the key to keeping your wooden tables looking great. This includes keeping table clutter to a minimum, so your table is an organized and pleasant space. Low clutter also makes cleaning it easier, as there are not things to work around.

Aim to dust your table on at least a weekly basis, using a lint free cloth, which can be something as simple as an old t-shirt. Lightly dampen the cloth for optimal dusting, or use a microfiber cloth that picks up dust. Not only will dust make your table dirtier, but lots of buildup can actually scratch your table, as you move plates and glasses over it.

In addition to consistently dusting the table, cleaning up little messes quickly will go a long way in preventing damage that needs heavy duty cleaning. When little spills happen, typically while eating, cleaning them up will keep sticky residue from forming. Use the liquid dish soap with warm water solution to tackle these spills quickly and safely with a microfiber cloth.

Once your tables are consistently clean and clutter free, you will have more time and energy to head for the hills above Loveland. Make sure to stop at the Loveland Visitor Center on your way west out of town to stock up on maps and information.
