What is a good process to clean my couches?

The specific process to clean your couches will depend a bit on what material your furniture is, but the general cleaning routine will be the same regardless of whether you have leather, suede, polyester or another type of material.

To get started cleaning your couch, you can do the following steps:

  • Wipe down you couch
    • Look for crumbs, debris, and anything else that has made its way onto the couch
    • Use a microfiber cloth to brush and dust the furniture
  • Vacuum the couch
    • Vacuum the cushions
    • Use a crevice tool to get into the edges and corners
    • Make sure to lift up the cushions to get underneath and within the couch
  • Vacuum underneath the couch
    • Depending on your floor type, you may be able to move the couch out of the way to vacuum
    • Use a wand attachment to vacuum underneath a couch that is raised off of the ground
    • Vacuum around the couch to get any debris and dust that was knocked onto the floor
  • If you have machine washable cushion covers, take them off to be washed
    • Follow the instructions for safe laundering of them
    • Investigate the couch for any stains that need to be attended to

How long should it take to clean my couches?

Cleaning couches is a pretty quick and easy task, and like everything cleaning related, the more often you do it, the easier and quicker it will be. For a clean couch, it can be as little as a couple minutes, but for a neglected couch with lots of wear, it could easily take 20-30 minutes depending on the level of cleaning it needs.

Factors to consider include:

  • How many couches and other furniture you have. The more couches and chairs, the longer it will take to clean them all.
  • How heavily used the furniture is. Couches with lots of kids and guests will be in rougher shape than the couch that only gets used a couple of times a week.
  • The presence of furry and long haired pets will undoubtedly make the cleaning process more difficult. Pet hair buildup is a reason to do a weekly couch cleaning, as the hair will be harder to get up and out of the couch the longer it sits and the more it builds up.

What should I do about stains?

Stains are never fun on a couch, but will inevitably happen! Fortunately, there are many products and homemade remedies to tackle couch stains, however, you need to make sure that your product of choice is safe to use on your specific couch material. Some couches are safe with wet water based cleaning, while others require a dry stain fighting solution. There are other couches that are safe with either type of cleaning product. Always read your couch cleaning instructions before taking on stain removal to make sure to not damage your material.

As with all materials and stains, it is always best to attend to couch stains as soon as possible. This will give the best chance to get the stain up quickly and easily to prevent a permanent stain or needing to call in a professional to safely get rid of the stain.

If you have a fresh stain, it is best to blot at it first, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain, as that can make it worse. Use a slightly damp cloth to blot at it, and prevent it from growing larger. Then you will want to apply your stain remover that is safe to use with the fabric of your couch. This may be as simple as a warm water and dish soap mixture for couches where it is safe to use a wet cleanser. Once the stain remover is applied, you will want to blot it away, again don’t rub or scrub, with a clean towel or rag.
