Why does mold build up in certain areas of the house?

Mold can buildup in areas of the home due to excess moisture buildup, and windows in the bathrooms and kitchen are very susceptible to mold growth. It is important to treat the cause of the mold buildup in addition to cleaning it to help keep it from coming back.  This is not only important from a cleaning standpoint, but also for your health and the health of your home fixtures.

Some reasons why mold grows and develops include:

  • Windows that are damaged or leaking roofs, which buildup moisture during rain and snow events
  • Excess unventilated moisture from using hot water for showers and cooking
  • Bad heating and ventilation system in your home leading to inadequate airflow

In order to help prevent the mold buildup, making sure that your home is ventilated is really important. After you shower, it is best to leave the exhaust fan on for at least 30 minutes, and keep any bathroom windows open as well. In general, keeping your windows open, at least periodically, will help to air out your home.

For those who live in humid climates, running an air conditioner will help to dry out the home during the summer, and using a dehumidifier will also help. You may also need to use a humidifier during the winter to help reduce the condensation in your home.

Lastly, keeping your home clean with regular deep cleaning and disinfecting will ward off the buildup of mold, even if you are in an environment that encourages mold growth. Staying on top of your cleaning will keep surfaces clean before the mold has a chance to appear.

What is the best way to clean mold off of window sills and frames?

Luckily cleaning mold off of your window sills and frames is really easy, and can be performed using a few different natural ingredients. Vinegar is a great go to cleanser for mold, and can be combined with baking soda for added effectiveness. For other helpful tips on disinfecting other areas of your home, check out our guide, as it may be a good cleaning task to pair with mold removal. In addition, this is a great chance to clean your window glass for a streak free shine!

To get started with the mold removal, you can use the following products and process:

  • Use vinegar as it is readily available and all natural and safe. The acidic nature of vinegar can kill mold spores, and it gives scrubbing power for cleaning. Unlike other cleaning, you can simply spray 100% vinegar straight onto the window sill and frame. Let it sit for about an hour to help it break down the mold, then wipe it away with a brush, microfiber cloth, or your cleaning tool of choice mixed with warm water. Then simply wipe it all dry.
  • Baking soda can help to add scrubbing power with the vinegar as needed. It works as a mild abrasive, and is safe for most surfaces. Make sure to use enough water afterwards to get all the baking soda removed from the surface. You can use the baking soda in a few different ways, from simply sprinkling it right onto the surface, or you can make a paste using water or vinegar to apply directly to the surface.
  • Tea tree oil is an alternative cleaner that can be used in place of vinegar. Simply mix 10 drops of the oil into 4 ounces of water, and shake in a spray bottle. Follow the same instructions as above for cleaning the sills and frames with vinegar. Tea tree oil is very gentle for use, but is effective against cleaning mold.

What about safety?

Mold can be hazardous to health, as it can exacerbate respiratory issues and allergies, and can create skin and other breathing irritations. If you have a lot of mold buildup throughout the home, it may be best to call in a remediation service to safely get rid of all of the mold.

For small areas of mold that you are comfortable cleaning yourself, there are a few precautions to take to keep yourself safe. As mold is an irritant for lungs and the respiratory system, you should make sure to wear a mask while cleaning. An N-95 will be effective at keeping the mold spores out of your mouth and lungs. Additionally, you should make sure to wear gloves to protect your skin. Lastly, wearing goggles is also a good idea, as you do not want to get mold spores into your eyes.
