For those of you who have the time to do your spring cleaning on your own, read on for a helpful guide to a comprehensive deep spring cleaning for your home.

Why is a spring cleaning important?

Spring cleaning is important in many ways.  Just like clearing out your garage in the summer, getting your home ready for the cold season, and why move out cleanings are so important, a spring cleaning fits into the routine seasonal calendar of cleaning.

A spring cleaning may be important for the following reasons:

  • Deep cleaning of areas that have been neglected through winter time
  • Airing out the home after the windows and doors have been shut and closed due to the cold weather
  • A thorough decluttering of the home is important to your mental health and creating a serene living area
  • Providing health benefits by decreasing the amount of dust and allergens in the air if home cleaning has been neglected
  • Great way to get some additional exercise

Where should I start?

While every house is different, it is typically best to start by decluttering your entire home.  If there has been a lot of belongings spread out throughout the home over the winter season, it will be necessary to put everything away before starting the spring cleaning.  Additionally, this can be a great opportunity to donate or throw away excess clutter.

Once your home is thoroughly decluttered, how you proceed will depend on how much time you have.  If you are pressed for time, breaking up the spring cleaning into multiple days will be your best bet.  If this is the case, you should try to batch your cleaning based on the type of room.  For example, break the home up into three days for cleaning.

  • Day 1:  Clean all the bathrooms in the home
  • Day 2:  Clean all the bedrooms and common areas
  • Day 3:  Clean the kitchen and anything else that is left over (additional dusting, baseboards and floors)

The most important thing is not to clean your home as fast as possible, but to make sure everything gets cleaned.  Breaking the cleaning up will make it more manageable and less overwhelming, and allow you to take your time on the areas that really need extra cleaning and attention.

What else should be specially cleaned?

Given that a spring cleaning should be very comprehensive, you may want to treat it like a move out cleaning depending on the state of your home.  This includes cleaning additional areas such as:

  • Refrigerator:  Empty your refrigerator and throw away any food or condiments that have gone bad.  Do a full wipedown of the interior, exterior, and all shelves inside.
  • Baseboards:  These are often neglected, but really make a room shine when they are clean.  If you have help, move furniture to get the baseboards clean, as well as the floors underneath the furniture that collect lots of dust and grime.
  • Deep Scrubbing:  Pay attention to around the stove and oven, as well as toilets and showers.  These areas will need additional deep scrubbing, even for the cleanest of homes.  Keep an eye out for grease splatter on kitchen cabinets around the stove, and consider doing a full oven cleaning as well.
  • Door Knobs and Light Switches:  These areas can get particularly grimy, and cleaning them can really transform your rooms.  Use a sanitizing spray on these areas, as well as an all purpose cleaner as needed.

What types of products should I Use?

This depends on a few different factors, from the state of the home, to the type of products you personally like to use.  For a home that doesn’t have too much grime and buildup, a mild all purpose cleaner may be sufficient.  This can be a store bought product, or a homemade solution using vinegar, dish soap, and warm water.

For homes that have been neglected for several months, stronger products may be needed.  Even in a home that is in a tougher state to clean, a mild all purpose will still do the majority of the cleaning.  You will likely need to use a stronger degreaser in areas like the stove, oven, and possibly the bathroom.  Additionally, you should sanitize surfaces and high touch areas throughout the home.
