Summer is the perfect time to spend an evening out on the deck with family and friends.

Where should I start to get my deck back in shape?

Just like getting your garage cleaned up for the summer, or your home in shape for spring or fall, working on your deck will take some time if it hasn’t been cleaned for a while. To get started with your deck cleaning, it is usually best to take everything off of it so you can clean without anything in the way.

Take a look at the decking material

Once you have cleared everything away from the deck, it is a good time to take a look at the actual deck material. Inspect if any repairs may need to be made, such as loose boards or areas to be repainted.

Do a thorough sweeping of the deck

Once everything is removed off of the deck, it is time to do a good sweeping of the deck with a large tough bristled broom. Make sure to clear off all the large debris and dirt, and pay particular attention to the areas in between the deck boards. These areas collect extra debris, sticks, and leaves, so make sure to get them thoroughly cleared out.

Use a pressure washer or a tough scrub brush

Depending on the tools you have available, and the amount of effort you want to put forth, once the deck is swept clean, you will want to work on cleaning it with water. One option is to use a pressure washer to really get the deck clean.

If you don’t have access to a pressure washer, you can use a tough scrub brush to scrub areas of the deck. You can purchase a deck cleaning solution, or make your own with water, vinegar and baking soda. Mix together:

  • ½ cup of white vinegar
  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • 1 gallon of water

This mix should be safe to use on most decking surfaces, but it is always best to consult with the manufacturer for speciality decks. Scrub this solution throughout the deck, then rinse off with a hose to finish up.

Consider applying a stain or sealer

Depending on your deck material type and its current condition, you may want to apply a stain or water repellent sealer once it is clean. This will help the deck to last longer and stay looking cleaner. You can apply a sealer or stain with a foam roller or even try using a microfiber mop head.
