What is the best process for cleaning my RV?

Cleaning an RV is an important step to having it in shape for the road! Before you get ready to clean your camper, make sure that your garage is clean and organized, so your RV cleaning will be more efficient and effective.

Start by decluttering

While decluttering is usually part of a full home cleaning, getting your RV organized is really important, as it is a home on wheels. Start by going through your camper, and take stock of what you have in it. Remember, less is more! Make a pile of things that have accumulated that will either go to donation, trash or recycling, or will be stored elsewhere.

Time to organize

Once you have gone through a solid decluttering, it is time to organize what will be kept in the camper. Chances are this will mostly be bedding, towels, and other kitchen and cooking equipment. There are a couple ways to go about this for efficiency. You can either take everything out of the camper that will be kept, and then start to clean the whole RV, or you can clean while you organize. If you choose to clean while you organize, then you can move one area of stuff out of the way while you clean. For example, empty out the kitchen area, and put everything in the bedroom. When you are done cleaning, you can put everything back in place in an organized manner. Depending on your set up, make use of small containers to reduce loose things floating around. This will help while driving, and will make finding and storing things much simpler.

Give the interior a good cleaning

Similar to cleaning the interior of a car, your RV will need a solid cleaning after a season of use. From the floor mats to the kitchen and bathroom, you will need to clean it all!

For most campers, a handful of microfiber cloths and an all purpose spray will do the vast majority of the cleaning. Focus on high use areas such as the kitchen and bathroom. Look at corners and edges for dust and grime buildup.

You will also want to clean the windows, both inside and out. Use an old cotton shirt or rag to reduce streaks, and grab your favorite window cleaner. If you would like to make your own, you can use the following recipe combined into a spray bottle:

  • ¼ cup of white cleaning vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon of dish soap
  • 2 cups of water
  • Favorite essential oil to mask the vinegar smell (optional)

For the exterior windows, you will probably need to spray them down first with a hose if the outside of the camper has not been cleaned. Once the dirt and grime has been cleaned off, then you can use the same mixture to get a streak free window cleaning for the exterior.

Vacuuming

Once you have done a solid wet cleaning of the interior, you can start to vacuum. Depending on what type of vacuum you have, you may need to head to a car wash for a higher powered one. If you have a vacuum with a few attachments, you should be good to go.

Start in the front, and take out all of the rugs and floor mats to be shaken outside. Once they are shaken out, you can vacuum them up (but don’t return them to the inside quite yet). You can use a wand attachment for much of the cleaning, looking into crevices and corners. If you have a large RV, you may want to vacuum and sweep the floor as you would in a home.

If you have upholstered furniture, you will want to make sure that you are cleaning it safely. If you are unsure of the material you have and how to specifically clean it, do some research to make sure that you do not damage it. For example, you may want to use a special cleaner on leather or suede to keep it safe.

When you have finished vacuuming, return the rugs back to the vehicle. If you have rubber mats, you can wash them with a hose or by hand. Make sure that they are completely dry before bringing them back inside.

Auto Checkup

If your camper has been sitting all winter, it is a good idea to take it in for a checkup before using it for summer. Make sure all the fluids are topped off, and all the other things are ready to go!
