Look for stuck on residue, gunk and stains, and work at them as needed. 

After that is complete, a good way to do a thorough interior cleaning to finish up the job is to run an empty hot water cycle with a cup of distilled white vinegar. This will help to sanitize the wash basin and can also help to break up any hard water deposits that have built up. For most washers, you should also leave the door open after each cycle to help it air and dry out, to reduce the chances for bacteria growth and mildew smell. 

If your machine is still smelling a little funky, you can do another hot water cycle, but this time with a half cup of baking soda.  

Should any special products be used for cleaning a washer machine?

The great thing about cleaning your washing machine, is that no special chemicals are needed. Typically an all purpose for the exterior and door area, and vinegar for the interior are sufficient. Baking soda can be added as well as needed. Other chemicals, such as bleach, can be used in place of vinegar, but it will harsher and stronger.
