How do I clean a stovetop quickly?

Like anything in cleaning, especially in kitchens, consistency is the key to speed! From cleaning your kitchen sink to developing an active kitchen cleanup routine, the most important thing is to do it often. The quicker you become at these small cleaning tasks, the more time you will have to work on other household chores, such as cleaning your gutters.

Use the following stovetop cleaning routine for a quick and easy solution:

  • Disassemble anything on the stove top, such as racks or grates
  • Wipe anything above the stovetop so any debris or dust falls on the stovetop surface
  • Wipe off any crumbs, food, or other loose debris off the surface
  • Pretreat the stovetop with your cleaning solution of choice
    • For general maintenance cleaning, a mild all purpose spray or warm water and dish soap will suffice
    • For a really dirty stovetop, consider reaching for a stronger solution, such as vinegar or a store bought degreaser
  • Take any accessory pieces to the sink for further cleaning
    • Gas stoves will usually have a grate that needs to be cleaned
      • You can clean this similar to the stovetop, however, it may need some heavy duty scrubbing or product to be used on it
    • Some electric stoves will have a removable coil
      • You can take the coil out to clean separately
  • Use a microfiber cloth to wipe and scrub the stovetop that has been pretreated
    • For cooktops that need more scrubbing power, consider using a non-scratch heavy duty sponge or a Scrub Daddy
    • You can also use a baking soda and vinegar mixture for added abrasive scrubbing power
    • Be mindful of the cooktop surface, as even something like a Magic Eraser can scratch stainless steel
  • Make sure to look at the other parts of the stovetop, such as the vent hood and control panel
  • Put everything back together

What are the different stovetop types and does cleaning differ between them?

While the general concept of stovetop cleaning is the same for each type of stove, there are some differences between them all. Generally speaking, cleaning a smooth ceramic style top will be the easiest and quickest, while a large gas stove top will be the most involved.

Types of cooktops:

  • Gas Cooktops
    • These are the toughest to clean for a couple different reasons. There is more to clean with this style of stovetop, as you will not just be cleaning the stovetop surface, but also the grates and/or griddles. Additionally, because it is more involved to clean, it will be harder for most people to keep it as consistently clean, which will lead to excess grease buildup on the stovetop. It can be hard to take it apart for a quick wipedown after each use, so grime and grease will build up to be thicker and more burnt on.
  • Electric Cooktop
    • One of the easiest styles of stovetop to clean is a ceramic glass top stove. This smooth surface has no accessories to remove and clean, and can simply be wiped down after each use. With diligent cleaning, there will be very little buildup of grease and grime, making a cleaning quick and efficient.
    • Other older styles of electric stovetops can be a little bit trickier to clean, but will still be easier than a gas rangetop. Coil style tops will add an extra step of removing the coils for a full cleaning, and you may need to remember to look underneath the coils and stovetop as food and other debris may fall below the coil attachment.
  • Induction Cooktop
    • These styles of stovetop generate heat within the cookware, making it a better electric stovetop for precise temperature control for heating up and cooling down. They are typically made with a ceramic glass surface, making them very easy to clean and wipe down after each use.

How do I make sure that I don’t neglect cleaning my stovetop?

Like anything in cleaning, consistency is key! Not only will it make your stovetop cleaner, it will make it more likely that you want to keep your cooktop clean. When something gets dirtier, it makes it easier to push the chore off, so keeping it in good shape is a win-win!

To help make sure that you don’t neglect the stovetop after each use, consider keeping a spray bottle and microfiber cloth next to the cooktop. This will make it really easy to spray it down quickly, without having an extra step of finding your cleaning supplies to get in the way of a quick wipe down.
