For some tips and tricks on dusting and cleaning your lights throughout your home, keep reading on!

What tools will I need to effectively clean and dust my lights?

Just like getting your windows clean and streak free, dusting your home takes the right tools and techniques to be efficient. Even if you are not fully stocked up like a professional home cleaner, you should be able to effectively clean the lights throughout your home.

Ideally you will want the following to clean the lights in your home:

  • High duster for high ceiling lights
  • Vacuum with a long attachment
  • Microfiber cloth
  • All purpose spray
  • Step stool or ladder

Where should I start?

As with anything in cleaning, it is always best to start from the top. If you are dusting high ceiling lights and fixtures, the dust that gets knocked off will accumulate below. Get all the high dusting done first, so you are not knocking dust down on already cleaned areas.

Before you begin dusting, always make sure the lights are turned off.

Depending on the type of high light fixture you have, you will either want to use a high duster on an extendable pole, or potentially a long wand attachment from a vacuum. For high recessed lights, you should be able to high dust them without much worry of damage, as there is nothing to knock down. Make sure to get inside and around the recessed area of the ceiling, as dust and cobwebs are prone to buildup in there. A long vacuum attachment can also be very handy for these areas, especially if there is a lot of buildup that has been cleaned.

For hanging light fixtures and other delicate lights throughout the home, you will need to be very careful when dusting. A hanging fixture will likely have a cord or chain that the light is held up by. These can be gently dusted with a high duster, as they tend to attract lots of dust and cobwebs. The way to actually clean the light fixture will depend on how delicate it is – you may be able to use the high duster, but more likely, you may want to grab a step stool to tend to the light by hand.

Once you are at the height of the light, if you need to dust it by hand, use a microfiber cloth and gently and carefully dust the fixture. Make sure to thoroughly dust all the areas of the light, including corners and grooves.

How should I clean the light?

Depending on the type of light fixture you have, you can usually use a mild all purpose spray to fully clean up the light after it is dusted. For special material lights, such as old metal lamps, it may be best to not use any wet cleaning solution on it, and only lightly dust it.

For the actual light bulbs, you need to be really careful when handling them. If the light bulb itself needs to be cleaned due to grease splatter in the kitchen, it is best to turn off the light, let it cool, then unscrew it from the fixture. Once it is cool, you can use all purpose spray and a microfiber cloth to try to clean up the actual bulb. This is also a good time to look at the fixture as well, as it will likely have the same residue on it as the bulb did. It is surprising how much grease and grime can end up on the ceiling and around lights in areas like the kitchen.

Once you have done a thorough cleaning of the lights in your home, it is time to reward yourself for a job well done with a dinner at Betta Gumbo in downtown Loveland, Colorado.
