Cleaning Your Garbage Disposal

garbage disposal in a stainless steel sinkThe kitchen is one of the most intricate and in depth areas in the home to clean – from cabinets and countertops, to the dishwasher and stove. It is no exception then that the sink is an important area to clean, which includes the garbage disposal which should not be neglected. Fortunately, the top Loveland cleaners are here to help walk you through this often forgotten cleaning task!

Where should I start?

When tackling the task of cleaning your garbage disposal, it is best to also deep clean your kitchen sink. While you are getting into the nitty gritty of kitchen cleaning, it’s also a good time to take on any dishwasher cleaning that needs to be taken care of, and overall, this is a good time to work on speeding up your whole kitchen cleaning routine.

To get started with cleaning the garbage disposal, follow these steps:

  • Turn off the garbage disposal, and disconnect it from any power source.
  • Inspect the disposal for any blockages.
    • Use tongs, pliers, or other tools to remove anything that is obstructing the disposal.
  • Plug your sink up, and fill it with hot water and reconnect the power.
    • Open up the plug and turn on the disposal to let the hot water flush through the disposal.
  • Disconnect the power once more for an in depth cleaning.
    • Use a long cleaning brush, or an old toothbrush, to clean all around the disposal and inside of it. Get as far in as possible with the brush. Use hot water with dish soap while scrubbing with the brush.
  • Reconnect the power for the last time, and once again plug and fill the sink with hot water. Remove the plug and flush the hot water through the disposal.
  • Finish up by pouring a couple cups of ice down the disposal, followed by cold water as you flush it all through the disposal.

Natural Deodorizing

Once you have given the garbage disposal a deep cleaning, it still may be necessary to work on deodorizing the disposal. With so much food and other scraps being put into it on a daily basis, odors can build up over time. Luckily this process is very easy and effective, and can be done as needed when performing a deeper kitchen cleaning.

Using baking soda and vinegar:

  • Apply about a half cup of baking soda to the disposal, and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar over it. Let it sit together for a few minutes, and then flush hot water over it while the disposal is on.

Using citrus peels:

  • This is a really simple and quick way to freshen up the garbage disposal, and can be done anytime you have some extra citrus peels.
  • Simply cut up the peels, and put them slowly into the disposal while it is running, with the cold water turned on.

Do not forget to maintain the cleanliness of the disposal

Just because the garbage disposal is very powerful, doesn’t mean that everything should go down it. Try to avoid putting more than 1 cup of food or debris into it at one time, and steer clear of putting other items down it such as oils, greases and paints, plastic, bones, coffee grounds, pastas, fibrous foods, and even oatmeal.

Additionally, it is best to shoot for cleaning your disposal on at least a monthly basis, and more if it is used heavily.
