Cleaning Your Dishwasher

August 30, 2021 by Mulberry Maids

a clean empty dishwasherEven though the dishwasher gets cleaned during the dishwashing cycle, it doesn’t mean that it should not be specifically cleaned on its own. Because of this, any top to bottom kitchen cleaning should include a cleaning of the dishwasher to keep the kitchen looking pristine.

That being said, a thorough home cleaning in Fort Collins is not always easy to achieve, as we are all busy with other responsibilities and duties. Getting on a consistent cleaning routine can help immensely with keeping your home in great shape.

Why should I clean my dishwasher?

Cleaning your dishwasher is just as important as cleaning your dishes or your reusable water bottles, as grime, soap scum and bacteria can build up inside the dishwasher. This needs to be cleaned to create a clean environment to effectively clean your dishes, as well as making sure the appliance runs smoothly as food can accumulate inside, which can affect the draining of the dishwasher. Luckily cleaning your dishwasher is not difficult, it can easily be done on a consistent monthly basis.

What is the best process to clean it?

Cleaning the dishwasher is actually a pretty simple process, and should not take too much time if you do it monthly.

To get started, use the following process for a quick cleaning:

  • First, start off by inspecting and cleaning the dishwasher drain. You may need to remove the bottom rack to access it. Once you have accessed it, clear away any food debris or other build up to ensure that the dishwasher will drain well. Look through the rest of the dishwasher to make sure any other gunk or debris is removed. This should include the rubber seals around the edges, where debris can get caught in.
  • Once all the debris is removed, it is time for the wet cleaning. One effective and simple solution for this is to place a cup of distilled white vinegar in a bowl on the upper dishwasher rack. Run the washer through a hot cycle which will help to remove any stains and odors from the dishwasher.
  • After the cycle has been completed, you can do one more deodorizing step by sprinkling baking soda along the bottom of the washer. Run another hot water cycle (shorter the better to save energy and water), which will help to whiten up the interior, and leave it smelling fresher.

Should I use any special products on it?

Just like in so many other aspects of cleaning, simple natural products are typically your best bet. Vinegar and baking soda should be sufficient for most dishwasher cleaning jobs. If you do need to use something stronger, like bleach or a degreaser, make sure that your dishwasher can handle it. For example, you should not use bleach in a stainless steel dishwasher, as it can damage it. After bleach or other strong chemicals are used, it is best to run the washer once more before putting any dishes in it, to make sure all the chemicals are flushed out.
