Cleaning of not just your microwave, but other appliances like your dishwasher and garbage disposal, should be part of your quick kitchen cleaning routine to help keep your home looking the best it can.

Read on for a simple and easy microwave cleaning routine that will keep your microwave looking great at all times.

What is the best process to clean a microwave?

While there are a few different ways to clean a microwave, the most effective process involves heating a mixture of water with either baking soda, lemon, or vinegar in the microwave.

To get started cleaning your microwave, follow these directions:

  • Add water to a microwave safe dish
    • Add either baking soda, vinegar (up to a 2:1 vinegar to water ratio for a really dirty microwave) or lemon juice to the water
  • Microwave the water mixture for 3-5 minutes, or enough to get lots of steam inside the microwave
    • You can let the mixture sit inside the microwave for a few extra minutes to let the steam really build up
  • Remove the water mixture
  • Use a clean microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe out the inside
    • The steam should be enough to break down all the stains and grime
  • If stubborn stains remain, use a water and baking soda paste for extra abrasive power to scrub away the stains

If you don’t happen to have any of the above ingredients on hand, you can sometimes just get away with microwaving plain water and using it’s steam to clean inside. This will depend on how often the microwave gets cleaned, and the current state of it.

Another option would also be to wipe out the interior of the microwave using a sponge or microfiber cloth dipped into a warm water and dish soap solution. Once it is wiped out, make sure to go over the surface again with plain water to make sure no soap is left inside.

What if the microwave is really dirty?

Even with an extremely dirty microwave, you will want to follow the steps described above for the safety of the microwave. You should avoid using any cleaning chemicals inside the microwave, such as an all purpose cleaner or a degreaser.

The steam from heating up water will be effective in fighting the caked on grease and food splatter present in the microwave.

Don’t forget the outside!

While the inside of the microwave is usually where the grime really gets built up, the exterior of the microwave should not be neglected. To clean the exterior, you can use a variety of different solutions.

If you clean the exterior of the microwave often, a simple dusting may be all that is needed to get it looking good again. For microwaves that need a little more love, the combination of your favorite all purpose spray and a microfiber rag will do wonders. You can also use your own mixture of water and dish soap for an effective exterior microwave cleaning.

Make sure to always use caution around the touch screen areas to not damage them with excess moisture. If you are unsure on how to clean your particular microwave’s exterior for any reason, look up the model number for specific instructions to make sure you do not damage it.
