Luckily, your Loveland cleaners are here to help guide you to use safe and natural cleaning solutions to help with the maintenance of your septic tank.Ā

Keep reading on to learn more about using the right cleaning products to keep your septic tank working great!

Why canā€™t I use any cleaning product I want?

Unlike a city water system that is designed to handle all different types of chemical inputs, a septic tank is a smaller unit that is more sensitive to certain chemicals. Using too many different chemicals can upset the bacterial balance in the tank, leading to issues such as clogged systems and problems with the drain field. If you have store bought cleaning solutions that you like, you can do some research on them to see if they are septic safe. It will usually say whether it is septic safe on the product’s bottle.Ā

What are some safe products or solutions to use?

Generally speaking, using natural cleaning solutions is safe for septic tanks. For example, if you are trying to clean your garbage disposal and drain, it is not advised to use a store bought drain cleaner, as they are filled with harsh chemicals. Instead, you can use a simple baking soda and vinegar mixture that will thoroughly clean and deodorize the disposal. Most store bought ā€œgreen cleaningā€ solutions will be septic safe as well.Ā

Other cleaning solutions that are safe to use, that can be bought in the store or easily made at home include:

  • Non-toxic phosphate free laundry detergent
  • Small amounts of ammonia based solutions
  • Water based cleaning solutions
  • Natural cleaning products, such as vinegar, baking soda and borax
  • Oxidized bleaches can be safer than chlorine bleach, but should be used sparingly

What are some other products to avoid?

There are many types of cleaners and solutions to avoid, to help maintain the healthy bacteria in your septic tank. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strong laundry detergent with phosphates and lots of suds
  • Ā Drain cleaners, even if septic safe, should be used with caution
    • Only ever use liquid drain cleaners
  • Chlorine Bleach
  • Strong anti-bacterial and disinfecting products

In addition to the various cleaning solutions that are harmful to septic tanks, other household products should not be disposed of down the drain when a septic tank is involved. Some common things include:

  • Water softeners, as they can harm the bacteria in the tank, releasing more waste into the drain field
  • Oil, gasoline, paint thinners, and other solvents
  • Cooking grease, as it can solidify in the tank and clog piping
