Leather furniture is a great investment, as it can last a long time with the proper care.  Leather furniture is also stylish and comfortable, making it a great choice for many homes.  Read on for 5 tips to keeping your leather properly cared for.

– Avoid using mild soaps and detergents on your leather furniture.  These soaps will strip away the natural oils on the leather, and it will become dry and brittle.  Trying to apply oil to the leather after it has been stripped will stain the leather.

– Do not expose your leather furniture to direct sunlight.  Look for a space in your home that does not receive direct rays, and is also not next to a heat or cold source.  These extremes damage the leather, causing it to dry out and crack.

– Protect new leather with a leather protector.  For routine maintenance, dust the leather with a just barely damp cloth, and remember to not apply soaps to the furniture.  A leather conditioner can be applied 1 – 2 times per year to help keep the leather in good condition.

– Tackle spills and stains immediately with a clean cloth or paper towel.  Oil spills, such as a salad dressing, can be cleaned up using baking powder, as it will help to absorb the oil.  For stains that cannot be removed on your own, seek professional help, as to not further damage the furniture.

– Light scratches can be buffed out using your fingers or a chamois.  You can use a little bit of distilled water to moisten the scratch to aid in its removal.
