How should I keep my classroom spaces clean and safe for students?
With kids going back to school, it is a good time to read up on other school related cleaning topics, such as keeping your lunch bag clean and making sure your kids keep their bedroom clean throughout the school year.Â
A clean and clutter free classroom is beneficial on so many level. From the safety of having clean surfaces for kids to having a distraction free environment to help with learning, whether it is a school room for 30 kids or a small homeschool classroom. Below you can read about the essential areas to clean in a classroom, and other tips to keep classrooms in the best shape possible for students and teachers!
Clean desks and table tops every day
Not only will cleaning desks and table tops daily help to reduce the risk of spreading germs, keeping clutter to a minimum will help to ensure a distraction free learning environment, and it also sets a good example to students about the importance of organized work spaces.Â
To clean and disinfect desks and tables, it is best to take a two pronged approach. First start off by cleaning the surface with a general all purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth. This will help to eliminate dirt and debris, and to help lift germs off of the surface. If you want to disinfect the surface, you will then spray your disinfectant on the surface. You will typically want to let it sit on the surface for about a minute (read the directions of your particular spray) to kill any bacteria, then wipe it away with a clean microfiber cloth.Â
You will want to do this daily for rooms that are used by many students throughout the day. For a small homeschool classroom, a full cleaning and disinfection is usually not necessary, unless someone has been sick. However, it is advised to do a quick 60 second end of day tidy and declutter to make sure your desk is clean and ready for the next day.Â
Address high touch surfaces
Similar to table tops and desks, you should make sure to address high touch areas frequently, especially in rooms with lots of kids and classes throughout the day. Make sure to both clean these areas with an all purpose cleaner and then the disinfectant spray, making sure to let the disinfectant sit to work its magic. Make sure to address the following areas in a classroom:
- DoorknobsÂ
- Switches
- Handles and faucets
- Counters and table tops
- Drawer pulls
- Play areas
- Electronics that are used by more than just the teacher
Take out trash and disinfect waste baskets
Taking out the trash at the end of each day is vital to keeping a clean classroom. In addition, you will want to wash and disinfect waste baskets regularly. Depending on how often they are used, this could be daily, or just a few times a week. Like the other areas, make sure to use an all purpose cleaner first, followed by the disinfectant spray for best results.Â
Figure out a toy and shared item disinfection and cleaning process
Just like desk spaces, toys and other shared items can be the source of quite a bit of clutter in a room. Make sure that toys and other shared items have a designated and organized place to be put at the end of the day. Additionally, like other shared things in a classroom, these items can be high touch and should be disinfected or washed as needed. For toys or stuffed animals that are machine washable, then the task is pretty easy to make sure that they are clean and safe for everyone to use.Â
For toys and other shared items that can not be washed in a machine, discretion is advised about what to do. You may be able to clean them with an all purpose spray and disinfectant, depending on the shape and material, or you may decide to not use them anymore if there is no adequate and easy way to clean them.Â
Focus on floors
Floors are really important to clean on a daily basis, and depending on the type of flooring you have in your classroom, the process will vary. For carpet, you may simply just need to vacuum at the end of the day, paying attention to corners and edges. Also, keep a lookout for new stains on the floor, as they are best addressed soon after spills occur.Â
For most hard flooring that will be found in a school environment, an all purpose cleaner or a specific floor cleaner should be sufficient for a thorough cleaning. For large classrooms and hallways, a wide mop will be the most efficient. Use a handheld spray bottle with your floor cleaner of choice, and spray it ahead of you so you can mop backwards toward the room exit to not step on freshly cleaned floors. Regardless of the floor type, it is always best to use as little moisture as possible when cleaning them.Â
Don’t skip the details
Even in school room cleaning, the details matter. It is what sets apart a clean enough room, from an immaculate room! Keep a lookout for high dusting that is needed on ceiling fans and in high corners and ceiling edges. Look at the windows and window sills for dust and fingerprints. Keep an eye out for stains and smudges throughout the room. The more consistently you focus on the details, the easier the cleaning will be over time!
